Alex Smith was brought in by the Chiefs to try and overcome their miserable 2 and 14 season in 2012 under quarterback Matt Cassel. Smith was benched in favor of Colin Kaepernick when he suffered a concussion during the 2012 San Francisco 49ers season. It is unbelievable that a player like Alex Smith would leave sunny California and a very successful 49ers team for a fly over state with cold weather and a dismal 2012 record of 2 and 14. He must have been insane! Surely, he had other offers.

When the Chiefs hired Andy Reid he immediately went into negotiations with the San Francisco 49ers to acquire Alex Smith. They ended up making a deal, trading Smith for the Chiefs 2nd round draft pick in 2013 and a conditional pick in the 2014 NFL Draft. He was reported by Chiefs coaches to have an extremely high quarterback IQ. Alex made an immediate impact, leading the Chiefs to a league leading 9 and 0 start in the 2013 NFL Season. Smith also led the team to the NFL Playoffs that season and threw 4 touchdowns and 0 interceptions. The Chiefs would go on to lose the game 45-44 to the Indianapolis Colts due to a major defensive failure blowing a 38-10 lead.

Alex Smith hails from Utah, and has one brother and two sisters. They all have tattoos honoring their grandfather who migrated to the United States from Austria when he was 12.
